Pediatric oncologist: Cure the patient, yes, but cure without damage

Pediatric oncologist and researcher Gregory Aune, M.D., Ph.D., tells the story of his favorite patient, a teenage boy some 30 years ago who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The patient survived but has experienced many health complications as a direct result of the cancer treatments, including a nonfunctioning thyroad gland, blocked coronary arteries requiring open-heart surgery, a mild stroke, multiple skin cancers and more.

He does what he does, he says, because he is that patient. Having Hodgkin’s lymphoma “is the singular event of why I’m here today.”

To learn more about UT Health San Antonio’s missions highlighted at the annual President’s Luncheon in May, watch the full presentation.

The annual President’s Luncheon was held March 5 at the Pearl Stable. President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, invited four exceptional faculty members to share a glimpse into the important work they accomplish each day. Attendees are community supporters of UT Health San Antonio.

In addition to Dr. Aune, the other presenters were Lisa Cleveland Ph.D., RN, Ruben Mesa, M.D., and Jennifer Sharpe Potter, Ph.D., M.P.H. Their presentations are also featured on Newsroom.
