The Public Health Service (PHS) Policy, United States Department of Agriculture ( USDAUSDAabbreviation for the US Department of Agriculture   ) Animal Welfare Act and Regulations and Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals require that all personnel involved with the care, treatment and use of laboratory animals be adequately trained, educated and qualified to perform their duties.  Training of animal use personnel is at the foundation for developing and supporting an Animal Care and Use Program whose priority is the protection of animal welfare. As such, it is the responsibility of the UTHSCSA, and through it, the IACUC, to ensure that all personnel are appropriately qualified to perform their duties prior to their work with animals.

The Office of the Institutional Animal Care Program administers the mandatory IACUC animal use training program using web-based modules provided by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) at CITIProgram.org. Animal use personnel are required to use CITIProgram.org to complete the following modules, however equivalent training may be accepted on a case-by-case basis as determined by the OIACPOIACPabbreviation for the UT Health San Antonio Office of the Institutional Animal Care Program.  .
