Research Team Member Credentialing and Scope of Practice

Type of Study Personnel Credentialing Process Actions Needed
Licensed Practitioners 1

Credentials for Licensed Practitioners, with a medical or other advanced degree, are verified by the UT Health Physicians credentialing staff. 

If you are not on the UT Health Physicians credentialing list and are providing clinical services at UT Health for research purposes, contact the Office of Clinical Research at OCRmail@uthscsa.edu or 210-567-8555 to request a research only credentialing packet.

Dental School Providers

Credentials are verified through the applicable Dental School Department as required. 

 
Nurses

Credentials for nurses providing clinical care in a research setting are verified by the appropriate department.  

 

Students 

Research Scope of Practice is required if interacting or intervening with living individuals

Residents

If working under a training permit and not processed through the standard credentialing process, requires Research Scope of Practice when interacting or intervening with living individuals.

Fellows

Non-licensed MDs

Research Scope of Practice is required if interacting or intervening with living individuals

Other Non-Licensed professionals/personnel
(all research staff, including but not limited to Principal Investigators (PI), sub-investigators, research coordinators, and research assistants who do not hold an active license that can be verified)

Research Scope of Practice is required if interacting or intervening with living individuals

1 Licensed research personnel may not be trained to do procedures outside of those allowed under their respective license that would require licensure and/or consent of the patient in the standard patient care setting (non-research).

2 The RScOP form should include duties assigned for all studies. The RScOP does not expire and should only be resubmitted for changes in duties or supervisor.  The RScOP is NOT required for licensed personnel who are conducting research activities within the limits of their license and approved clinical privileges, if applicable.

Research credentialing is required for all researchers (including non-clinicians) at the affiliate institutions.   This process can be take up to 90 days and should begin early.  Contact the appropriate research office as soon as possible to begin the process.
