Department of Developmental Dentistry

Pediatrics and Orthodontics

We care for the growth and development of children's oral health. We focus on pediatric and orthodontic dentistry; our goal is to establish lifelong practices that lead to good oral health.

Developmental Dentistry student with welcoming smile.

Our philosophy of care encompasses the early identification, prevention, and treatment of oral and craniofacial disease. San Antonio represents an enormous challenge, as we are located in an area of significant oral and general health disparity. We believe in educating our students and the community in the early identification, prevention, and treatment of disease.

Research

Our researchers focus on pediatric oral health and orthodontics. We have programs in basic scientific research and clinical research. Our students and faculty collaborate with partners across the UT Health San Antonio, including the medical school, and with multiple hospitals in the greater San Antonio area.

Our Top Research Focus

Our science and clinical research programs include studies that examine applications of sealants to prevent cavities, the genetic regulation of bone cells, including changes during orthodontic treatment, and the development of new models that study the regulation of bone modeling.

  • CAT of the month: Remove metallic orthodontic appliances prior to MRI imaging
  • Sjogrens Syndrome Salivary Gland and Apoptosis
  • Immortalized mouse dental papilla mesenchymal cells preserve odontoblastic phenotype and respond to bone morphogenetic protein 2
  • Sealants: Where we have been; where we are going.
  • Effectiveness of a sealant compared with no sealant in preventing enamel demineralization in patients with fixed orthodontics

Faculty

We are particularly proud of our faculty who have achieved national and international acclaim in their respective areas of clinical and research expertise.

Faculty & Staff

It’s required that you be a little funny, you be a little silly sometimes; it’s a different personality as a specialty. We’re advocates for kids. Dr. Maria-Jose Cervantes Mendez
